Donald Broadbent designed an experiment named “Dichotic Listening” to see how the mind processes things when our attention is switched from one ear to the other. In this diagram we see how the Dichotic Listening Task is performed, different inputs are sent to the left and the right ear through the headphones. This man has 1 channel of input information on his right then 1 different channel on his left. When the information is processed, the man in the diagram then speech outputs the channel of information he was given on his right ear “President Lincoln often read by the light of the fire”. A person can only pay attention to the message in one ear at a time, so this causes one message to become lost because of short term memory.
