Mental rotation and tacit knowledge

What do you see in this picture? If you thought that the man in the picture is standing at the lakeside, then you are wrong. Using mental rotation of this picture, it took me quite a while to figure out what this picture really is about. If you rotate the picture 90 degrees anti-clockwise, you can see that this picture is actually depicting a man lying on the tree that has been pulled out from the ground. However, our implicit knowledge distorts what we are perceiving visually. This shows that visual images can be deceitful, so we need careful interpretation of the actual image to infer what it is really describing.

  1. Yoooooo!! Thats crazy! The background looks like it is taken place on a lake. But then again the thinner trees look like the picture is supposed to be seen from the 90 degree angle. This is pretty awesome!
